Saudi Arabia Regulatory Update: SASO Reinforces Import Prohibition on Asbestos
SASO reinforces the asbestos import ban. CABs must not certify products with asbestos. Firms must file asbestos-free declarations.
The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) has issued a formal circular to all accredited Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs) reinforcing the absolute prohibition of asbestos and any materials containing asbestos within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This update specifically targets products falling under the technical regulations for kitchen tools and appliances.
Key Compliance Requirements
Under the new directive, manufacturers and importers must adhere to the following:
Certification Ban: Conformity assessment bodies are strictly prohibited from issuing certificates of conformity for any product found to contain asbestos.
Mandatory Declaration: Companies must provide a formal declaration as part of their Technical File confirming that their products are free from asbestos.
Legal Basis: This circular aligns with the "Technical Regulation for Food Safety of Tools and Appliances Used in the Kitchen" (No. 177) and the long-standing Cabinet Decision No. 162, which bans the importation of asbestos-related substances.
Enforcement and Penalties
SASO has explicitly stated that any violation of this circular will result in immediate legal action against the non-compliant parties, including the certification bodies involved.
